A suggestion is to impose a quota on all your users' mailboxes. It
stops such ghost users from using up all the disk space.

There are several scripts available on
www.qmail.org to convert from
mbox (the format used by UW-IMAP) to Maildir. Of course, you'll need a
Maildir-aware IMAP server, since UW-IMAP doesn't do Maildir.
