I had similar errors (though the message got frozen instead of defered),
and it turned out to be somehow related to using TLS on that connection.
I added the hosts to hosts_avoid_tls, and it stopped.

Try if it helps you. In case it doesn't, try running the delivery under
strace/ltrace and see what kills it.
