Sometimes there are reasons to compile packagese, also on debian
machines!
However, compiling and installing a package under debian is as
simple as installing binaries without breaking the whole
installation system (very powerful indeed).
See
apt-get -b source ....
apt-get build-dep ...
dpkg-buildpackage -b
and the new
apt-build
