Mailing lists have changed a lot since I started out on internet based
lists.

The convention used to be that issues were raised on the list. Then in
many cases discussion took part within a small subset of the list using
direct mail without the list being included. Then when some degree of
resolution was reached a summary was posted to the list itself -
sometimes sparking a bit more discussion. There was a push to keep
intermediate stuff off the list to keep traffic down. This was also a
sa very strong reason for not having reply-to list.

The norm now is that we have the discussions on the list itself.

Somewhat spurious - I trim CC lists down to a few (ie <5).
