Problem solved. In case anyone is interested, our client had
a single dot on a line in his sig. Outgoing mail to his contact
at Motorola was fine, but when his contact replied to him it
A) didn't quote the message like most mail clients do, and
B) apparently their SMTP server passes leading dots through
without escaping them, effectively cutting off the reply.
