I believe it will fail with a temporary 4XX code.

At the only installation that I have that uses Exchange, we decided to not
do LDAP queries with Exim but rather have a process that creates a flat
text file instead which gets updated twice a day.

This way, even if the ldap system itself falls apart, we still have what
was legit email addresses at the gateway and we can then queue them inside
on the hub until the system comes back up.

I plan on documenting what we are using soon.

This system has about 4k users, and there is no noticible lag in the
lookups at all.
