It could do nothing but -- it must defer to RFC 1123. :-)

Why would you expect to? They're not pertinent to SMTP directly --
they're simply used in the DNS to validate hostnames. Hostnames are
used in SMTP (particularly in the greeting command and it's response).

You must learn to look at the _whole_ picture. No one rule in the RFCs
stands alone.
