Just sorted through some this myself yesterday. Might want to try
tpop3d (<
http://www.ex-parrot.com/~chris/tpop3d/>) as your pop3 server.
It's written to support extensible authentication methods and should
work well for your needs.
If you want to use an lsearch setup rather than mysql for maintaining
your exim virtual domains, you should be able to use tpop3d's
auth-flatfile method to use use the same file for user authentication.
