Before choosing a particular software package, its important to decide
what you are going to do with unwanted email. Given that nowadays _most_
internet email is unwanted, this decision is critical.
- If you want to tag+deliver spam and disinfect+deliver viruses, then you
can choose an after-the-event scanner. MailScanner is almost certainly
the best of the bunch.
- If however you want the capability to reject spam+viruses during the
SMTP dialog, then you need an SMTP-time scanner, such as exiscan.
The installed-base of after-the-event scanners is larger. This is partly
because SMTP-time scanners are newer/emerging technology.
It really comes down to whether your users want to deal with the unwanted
emails themselves, or whether they prefer to place their trust in an
automated process to do it for them.
