I guess that depends on your definition of "better".
You avoid locking issues on mail deliveries, true.
However maildir directories cause many more disk operations as you have
a lot more files to stat (potentially) and open/read/close.
So while maildir might be better after you reach the mbox threshold, you
get to a point where maildir's own thresholds make it less better than
mbox :-)
