Hmmm...

"Many spams" -- also many legitimate newsletters, the publishers of
which want an idea of how many people actually read them. Particularly
important in the face of mail providers who discard mail without notice
because the volume leads them to think it's spam.

"now" -- both spammers and legitimate senders have been doing this for
years.

Keep this in mind if you continue in your quest to check for and act on
this signature. :-)
