If the goal is just to avoid an email client, at your command prompt
you can:

mail someone@??? << EOF
Here's your mail.
EOF

Or create a file with the headers and message body and say:

exim -t < your_file

The file might look like:

To: someone@???
From: you@???
Subject: test

Skip a space before starting the body.

If you really want to connect to the smtp port then forget what I said.
