Don't know if this will help at all, but you might like to try setting
lock_fcntl_timeout in the appendfile transport if your system is very
busy doing local deliveries. That, of course, affects locking on
mailboxes, not on spool files, but as it might speed up deliveries, it
should also cause spool file locks to be held for shorter periods.
