I'm not sure what you mean. Here we have multiple equal-priority MXs
and none of them store email -- they just pass it on to the appropriate
message store (which is usually physically adjacent). If you're thinking
of physical separation, why a backup MX rather than an equal MX?

I can possibly see some use for it in a large organization with multiple
internet gateways in different locations, so that e.g. uk.VBC.com
could be a secondary MX for us.VBC.com and vice versa, and because
it's one organization they can implement the same security policy and
verify addresses using the same data. This is useful in the event of
reachability problems across the Internet (which might not affect the
very big company's internal network), but in the event of an outage of
us.VBC.com, would uk.VBC.com have enough oomph to deal with all the
email? Perhaps it would be OK if there was also jp.VBC.com etc. to
share the extra load.
