since this discussion, i've been looking for a way to phrase this that's fair
to both pieces of software.

postfix:

1) has a carefully crafted security model
2) is newer and perhaps less mature as a result
3) does not offer quite the extensibility of exim

exim:

1) does not have a security model in the postfix/qmail sense,
but is generally well coded and well thought out
2) is quite mature
3) is extremely flexible

both are fine pieces of software; when i adapted exim, postfix was
still vmail and was still pretty primitive. if i had to make the choice
today, i have no idea what i'd do.
