Thinking that this may be a smtp problem, I modified the exim.conf:
it had this:
I thought it was an smtp problem and so under the Transports
configuration section I had this:

remote_smtp
driver = smtp

And I added this:
connect_timeout = 5m
command_timeout = 5m
data_timeout = 7m
final_timeout = 10m

The reason why, is from other posts to this group under: [Exim] unwanted
mutiple emails] whereby the fix apparently was due to firewall
configurations. Thinking logically, I thought that since there were no smtp
settings in the conf, then smtp was timing out after sending a message then
retrying because the wait threshhold wasn't long enough. Not sure of where
else to check.
