I believe the debian package has the tool update-exim4.conf which from
those many subdirectories generates
/var/lib/exim4/config.autogenerated.

If the file /etc/exim4/exim4.conf exists, debian's exim4 will use that
(according to the man page for update-exim4.conf).

So I copied /var/lib/exim4/config.autogenerated to
/etc/exim4/exim4.conf and then further editted the exim4.conf file to
my wishes, and it seems to work.
