I plead the Edmund Hillary excuse. ;-)

The first version of the script was never intended for the monitoring
it's currently doing - it was knocked up quickly as an automagic pinger
to help spot when one of the web servers threw its toys again (obviously
never when it was being watched), and then get hacked around a bit. :)
