Um... It never occurred to me that anyone would read the mailer.conf(5)
manpage and not know how to apply it to an Exim installation! :-)
For what it's worth, from FreeBSD 4.9-RELEASE onward, if you install the
Exim package at operating system install time, the installer will do the
mailer.conf magic for you.

It's inappropraite for mailer.conf(5) to provide examples for every MTA.
Most users are able to read the page, get the idea and apply it. I'm
confident you'd hit a brick wall trying to get that change committed to
the FreeBSD base system.
My opinion is that the combination of POST-INSTALL-NOTES and
mailer.conf(5) is sufficient, and that you're just expecting too much
handed to you on a plate.
However, I'll keep my eyes open. If it turns out that other people find
this confusing, I may spell it out in the POST-INSTALL-NOTES. :-)
