[Exim] problems with SSL/TLS and evolution

I seem to be having problems with SSL/TLS with evolution. I have exim
running on port 465 with --tls-on-connect and when I try and send mail
with evolution I see:

"Welcome repsonse error: Input/output error"

and the error log for exim has:

Sep 22 16:01:14 mail exim[32227]: 2003-09-22 16:01:14 TLS error on
connection from [xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] (SSL_accept): error:1408F455:SSL
routines:SSL3_GET_RECORD:decryption failed or bad record mac

Any idea what this could be?
