if you can convert to Maildir format mailboxes, then courier-imap works
well. i recommend it.
since both exim and courier can query mysql and postgresql databases, you
can support fairly complex virtual domain setups described in a database
back end, and pretty much put the mail in whatever directories you want
based on the recipient addresses.
the only tricky bit is with rpm-based linux systems. to build courier you
need to build an rpm from the tarball and then install the rpm. many of
us missed that little bit of indirection on our first attempt to build
courier.
there are scripts for mbox->Maildir conversion around. i have some crude
supplements to the standard scripts, but i have a more complex conversion
coming involving a bunch of virtual domains and i'll be beefing mine up a
bit for it.
