I'm using courier-imap AND courier-pop - with ~/Maildirs
compiled from lastest current source
both access the same Maildir and I leave it to the user to decide which
they prefer
as for securing ... I'm afraid I'm just starting out
but it does support all the standard md5 / ssl type o thing
+ there are so many howtos ... I'm still wading through them myself
