HOW does it fail? Is there anything written to the Exim log? To the
syslog? To the console? (I presume the "etx" therein is just your typo
in this posting.)
Have you looked inside the init.d/exim file to see which command it is
running? Have you tried running that same command directly (as root)?
In other words, we can't help you much with just that information.
