Just FYI: If this is no ARM machine you should be able to install the
exim4 packages from sid, now that glibc 2.3.2-7 is in sarge.

Running an IMAP server on the server sounds like the correct solution,
if you don't mind dumping "independent of each other". Installing
courier-imap really should not be a big problem.

If there is just a single user on server and notebook using ~/.forward
is the easiest possibility.
