... and if you fly out someplace on vacation and want to auth to your
server from (say) an airport wireless connection or a cybercafe?

Fixing the authenticator is the way to go here. Not playing stupid
damnfool tricks with restricting IPs.

Think of what'll happen if the guy uses an open proxy in the states, or
england, or whatever, rather than chinese and taiwanese open proxies [yup,
all those IPs connecting and trying AUTH to his server are open proxies]
