I don't think exim4 can easily be made the default, since it's a
non-trivial upgrade, in terms of migrating the config.
Having said that, I'm running Debian's exim4 - the "unstable"
distribution (4.22) - and the upgrade was fine. I used exim_convert4r4
which did a good job of converting my config, and then went through and
cleaned up manually.
Debian's use of a conf.d directory for splitting up the configuration is
interesting (see below), once you get your head around it (the separate
snippets are re-combined automatically at exim startup).
