Author: Yves Goergen Date: To: exim-users Subject: [Exim] No Autoresponder to Lists etc.: How to?
Hi list,
with all those Autoresponders and Virus Alerts we had in the last time, I
have a question on that _before_ I'm getting in that business and running my
own mail server.
How can I effectively prevent my (exim4) mail server to send out any
automated mail to other automated programs, mailing lists or recepients that
never intended to receive this message?
First I had thought of a concept to collect possible patterns of mailing
list addresses, but those were just too many, I believe. Then someone here
meant, why mail servers just didn't cache the Message-IDs of any mail sent
through them so that they could compare possible automatic replies on it and
discard illegitimate ones.
I don't even fully understand all the possible holes in such a concept or
what methods one could apply to achieve this. Is there already a proven
concept of how to handle those problems? I just don't want to fully and
mightlessly participate at the next wave of Windows mail worms spreading out
to innocent users. (I mean my mail server. I myself have a desktop firewall,
virus scanner and an NAT gateway here...)
Maybe it's the best way in such times to declare all auto-responders as spam
(that kind to discard immediately) and all virus alerts as virus itself
(that also must be discarded then)?
Any suggestions?
