That's not all that it breaks, in our experience.
There's one site we need to send to that still does this. Some
fraction of mails from us to them never complete - they get to the end
of the transaction, but then they timeout, and get scheduled for
retry. Over and over (for that particular mail) until they finally
time out. Meantime, other mails pass consistently.
