Envision grown man with egg on face. :(
I don't have any idea what I did wrong, but in trying to recreate the
problem this morning, it worked perfectly. I suspect a dizzy finger caused
my problem originally.
Let's chalk this one up to a stupid mistake and try to forget it.

You still haven't said what you mean by "didn't". What exactly went
wrong? Did it just skip the router? What is the output from
exim -d -bt x@domain2
for example?
