Please do not use this patch! I screwed up again. I was overconfident,
and pressed "send" on the message after the test suite had got about
halfway through, thinking "It must be reading configurations OK". I
should know not to do that. It fails on octal integers.
New patch will follow in due course - but this time I'll run the
complete test suite, so it won't be till tomorrow.
