Turn off the exim daemon, then start it manually:

    $ exim -d -bdf


You may find it useful to save output to some file, for later review.

    $ exim -d -bdf 2> /tmp/exim-debug


When you think you have some stuff in /tmp/exim-debug, hit ctrl-c and
then you can see what non-mail commands were issued, how many non-mail
commands etc.
