Just this week I ran into this problem (lots of bounces from a mass-mailer). You can limit spamd child processes with an option when you start spamd: --max-children. Your system won't hang, but it will run v e r y s l o w, so the longer-term fix is a faster system.

Subject: [Exim] Spamassassin opening up lots of processes
Hi
We are using SpamAssassin with Exiscan and Exim 4.2 on NetBSD 1.6.1. Or...we were.
For some reason our system had way too many spamd processes running and it took over our system.
Is this usual? unusual? Is there a way to limit the number of spamd processes opened? I tried lowring my max connections to exim but that didn;t help.
Has anybody run into this?
Frank
