Step 1: Firstly, get ride of sendmail alltogether with
sendmail_enable="NONE" in your /etc/rc.conf and kill all sendmail
processes you see.
Step 2: Install the port of Exim from /usr/ports/mail/exim and it will
create all the start up scripts you need.
Step 3: Enjoy.
