Yes authenticated SMTP is the only real answer, we will be going down
that route soon. We are in the middle of an email service upgrade at mo,
putting in 6 mail servers (exim 4 of course) 3 mail routers (running
perdition) and probably going to Cyrus IMAP. Once we get all this
working we will then move our users to authenticated SMTP over SSL (The
new mail routers have SSL accelerator cards).

Should be a busy summer. I will be at Phils bash in Cambridge on Monday
if anybody wants to talk about it, always willing to listen to other
peoples ideas.
