i think the default changed somewhere along the line but it was a long time
ago.

not lots, but definitely some.
i suggest "sort of" giving in. since it's an acl, you can blow a hole for
their mail server only. tell them that you're doing them a favor, and in X
months time, you're going to close the hole; that you're giving them some
latitude to change their non-compliant server over time.
