i have now got this all working properly, with a somewhat cobbed
combination of the Russ Nelson script from qmail.org, safecat, and a shell
script to handle correctly naming the Maildir files to indicate status
(read, unread, replied to).
if anyone wants a copy, they are welcome to it.
