Problem solved -- by none other than Philip Hazel (imagine that!)

I'll give the reference here, but first a reminder (which I SHOULD have
remembered myself!)

Had I "searched first," I would have found:

And once I inserted the five lines of code with a bit of annotation so I'd
know how I got there, I HUPed exim and tested it.

No particular surprise, but it WORKED!!!!

(Now if I can figure out how to get my return address to stop saying
"postmaster" . . . (LOL) )
