[Exim] very strange problem - HELP PLEASE

here is the problem I am having. We have Exim running with qpopper/mysql
support.

If I send an email from my mail client to a remote domain - no problem, but
if I send it programmatically from our webserver it get's an authentication
required error. the from address is the same as well as the to address.
I've been going totally nuts. If anyone has any ides please let me know.
