I don't see why not.. the uid/gid it runs as can be specified in the config
can't it?
Just ship the default config with:
exim_user = exim
exim_group = exim
That should do just fine!

And Exim will run as user smmsp:mail?
I'll try to explain my situation:
I'm building RPM-package for ALTLinux distribution(
www.altlinux.ru).
Creating exim user and group imposible on phase building/compilation,but
exim
must run as user EXIM and group MAIL(or EXIM).
Exim user will be created on installation of RPM phase.
Can I compile exim with existing user and run it later as user exim?
Is it possible?
