Deduced Statement:

Spam Assassin (SA) takes a lot of computing resources compared to other email
processing tasks (such as antivirus or just plain routing and delivery).

Question:

Is this because SA has a partially interpretive-type language for it's engine
(Perl, IIRC), rather than being fully compiled, such as a C, C++, or even
*gasp* Fortran program?

Extension of Question:

Would an Open Source program that does mostly same thing, perhaps even using
the same format configuration files, but as a fully compiled program, be worth
building? By "worth it" I mean, "Could one reasonably expect a significant
performance improvement?"
