That's what we wanted to hear! ;-)
I've recently been benchmarking a fileserver for a client. It has a 2.8
GHz so-called Pentium IV Xeon, but with only 512KB L2 cache memory.
It's fast, but nowhere near as fast as one might think it could be based
on the clock speed alone. I didn't exactly worry about its CPU speed
since it's about ten times as fast as is needed for the intended job,
but in passing I noted that for many things, including compiling, it
doesn't seem to be anywhere even remotely close to an order of magnitude
faster than a plain old 300MHz Pentium-II -- maybe only 4-5 times as
fast, and that's even with disks that are in fact a full order of
magnitude faster, and with over twice the main memory available (and
probably two orders of magnitude faster memory throughput capability),
than I'm used to using on my normal PII/300MHz development server.
