This is the greatest myth of the world.
- Software licence costs, perhaps a fraction of the cost of 'closed source'.
But usually this is not the whole picture of costs. You can think this but you
neglect the fact that
- Building up such system is a painful task (selecting server components)
and it costs
- or you/your team are working for free
- open source programs are not always free, read licences!!!
- Building up client system for the users is not easy task
- If you haven't used Exchange/Lotus solutions you don't know
how systems should be and must be. We are living 21st century. :)
Whole communication infrastructure for user with time management
is single problem for single user. And they should interact with
drag and drop. For engineer perhaps elm&pine&emacs might be good..
- Error situations can be costly also with free software
- Important mail is lost by accident or ill-configured spam-filter.
- for example one of your client is legal viagra seller.. :)
- or traditional component failure
- Those free component doesn't neccessary work well together
- debugging this
I love my our company systems (closed) because it allows me to do
a lot of stuff with one interface and that stuff can be synced to my
GSM phone as well as pocketpc & laptop. This means emails, calendar,
task lists&reminders etc. and other people can interact with that.
Lets get back to Exim.. :)
