The weirdness is all my fault. I'm running debian, but compiled 4.12
from source, installed to '/usr/local/exim/', installed an equivs
package, created a symlink for the log directory, but didn't create
one for the spool. So I removed the retry file for an old
installation.

I'm sorry to have wasted your time in an issue that should have
been known to me. I have learned a lot from this experience, though,
and your assistance is very appreciated.
