The function of the null sender is described in RFC2821 ("Simple Mail
Transport Protocol"), Section 6.1 "Reliable Delivery and Replies by Email"
(or, if you prefer to use the older, but still STD1, version, Section 3.6 of
RFC821).

RFC1123, Section 5.2.9 states:

"The syntax shown in RFC-821 for the MAIL FROM: command omits the case of an
empty path: "MAIL FROM: <>" (see RFC-821 Page 15). An empty reverse path
MUST be supported."

2821 is flagged as updating 1123, so the two in concert are a definitive
reference to null senders.
