Well, no, not exactly -- it's much better to return responses indicating
errors related to the client-SMTP at HELO time, and to return responses
indicating errors related to the envelop sender address at MAIL time.
While there are some broken server implementations which don't react as
well to error responses at HELO and MAIL times, but they're in the
minority (in terms of numbers of implementations, not instances) and
they will eventually get fixed.
