[Exim] What happens to a mail if the transfer times out?

don't know if this is the correct place to ask, but it regards the smtp
protocol....

What happens if the line drops / gets too much load during a mailtransfer,
and the mail is not completely transferred? Will the mail be marked as
"not transferred" and tried to deliver once more, or will it just be lost
in the big dark net?
