The strange thing is there is no error in the log files (rejected, panic
or main).
My MySQL is set to allow anyone from this machine connect and
authenticate as a mysql user.

But I agree that it seems this is where the problem could be.

Is there any reason why exim -d -v -bd -q30m running as root would be
any different to exim -bd -q30m run as root?
Being new to exim I dam not 100% sure how it all works, but I could not
find where the user/guid was set in the config file. Also, I am
changing users to deliver with this particular router, so exim must be
root to do that.

I *was* getting this problem when I had more restrictive permissions on
the Maildirs of the virtual users, but you gotta admit, it's a bit
wierd.
