I patched the error messages in the exim, so this one indeed means that
there was a timeout during the callback.

You are exactly correct, I ocnfigured the callbacks on that machine to time
out after 90 secs because the SMTP spec only gives you so long to
acknowledge a mail from command.
Unfortunately, it does create callback failures for servers that fail to
provide an SMTP banner in 90 secs
