The docs are wrong for the latest version of Exim. The code contains
this comment:
/* The AUTH command is not permitted to occur inside a transaction, and may
occur successfully only once per connection, and then only when we've
advertised it. */
The change was made for 4.11, which is why the docs are wrong (they
haven't yet been updated).
