I am not sure about what problems they found with exim410 and Jaguar,
I compiled it just commenting out one declaration that was
conflicting with the headers, and in 412 (or even perhaps 411) Philip
corrected it.

why don't you telnet to port 25 of your mailserver running exim and issue a:
EHLO whateveryoulike
^^^^ Note the spelling.
it should give you back:

250-PIPELINING
250-AUTH LOGIN PLAIN etc...
250-STARTTLS
250 HELP
the STARTTLS and AUTH lines are critical, if they are not there,
recompile exim (with the Makefile I sent you, but commenting out the
eximon line).
